Medvedev pities poor cows

The Finnish-Russian Civic Forum (FINROSFORUM) promotes cooperation between the peoples of Finland and Russia by supporting civic initiatives for democracy, human rights, and free speech.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered to stop setting clocks one hour back as of autumn 2011. “When the clocks change, people experience stress and may develop an ailment,” he said. “Switching to daylight saving time and back […] disrupts human biorhythms. People are irritated, they either oversleep or wake up too early, and do not know how to spend that extra hour. That is not to mention poor cows and other domestic animals, which know nothing about the time change and wonder why milkmaids arrive late,” Medvedev said.

Russia’s ruling party, United Russia, appealed to Medvedev on 1 February 2011 to have the seasonal time switch abolished. “The party receives plenty of appeals from people who want the seasonal time switch abolished because it causes health problems. People complain about stress, sleep disorders, reduction of labour productivity, and frustration, as well as about more serious problems, such as intestinal disorders, high blood pressure, and weakening of the immune system,” first deputy head of the party faction, Tatiana Yakovleva said.
