Other Russia Members Charged in Moscow

The Finnish-Russian Civic Forum (FINROSFORUM) promotes cooperation between the peoples of Finland and Russia by supporting civic initiatives for democracy, human rights, and free speech.

Police in Moscow carried out mass arrests of members of the non-registered opposition party, Other Russia. At least nine people were arrested in raids carried out by Russia’s political police, the so-called E-centre, at homes of party activists over night. Most of those arrested were severely beaten up during the raids. Those arrested will now be charged under Russia’s so-called anti-extremism legislation, Article 282 of Russia’s Criminal Code.

Among those arrested are three members of the Executive Committee of Other Russia: Nikolay Avdyushenkov, Andrey Gorin, and Alexey Sochnev. The other six arrested are Dmitry Borisov, Dmitry Kolesnikov, Igor Shchuka, Nina Silina, Sergey Zaplavnov, and Maria Zinchenko. Mr Sochnev is an editor of the popular website, BesTToday. He was a speaker at the Finnish-Russian Civic Forum’s FINROSFORUM 2008 conference held in Helsinki.

Alexander Averin, member of the Executive Committee of Other Russia, said the mass arrests and consequent charges were linked to the attempt of the party’s leader, Eduard Limonov, to register his candidacy in Russia’s upcoming presidential elections. Other Russia plans to hold a demonstration to protest Russia’s illegal elections on 4 December 2011 and organise a meeting of Mr Limonov’s supporters on 11 December 2011.

Earlier, thirteen members of Other Russia’s party organisation in St Petersburg were charged under Article 282. The authorities accuse the members of Other Russia of continuing the activities of the left-wing political party, National Bolshevik Party (NBP), which was banned in 2007 — also under Russia’s draconian anti-extremist legislation. One of those charged, Sergey Porokhovoy, fled to Finland, where he applied for political asylum.
