“Past Cannot Be Forgotten”

The Finnish-Russian Civic Forum (FINROSFORUM) promotes cooperation between the peoples of Finland and Russia by supporting civic initiatives for democracy, human rights, and free speech.

The Arkadia International Bookshop in Helsinki will host a talk with journalist and human rights defender Oksana Chelysheva and Chechen singer Liza Umarova on the situation in Chechnya on Saturday 5 May 2012 at 4 pm. The discussion will be in English and Russian.

The event will include a screening of the film, Aldy: A Past That Cannot Be Forgotten, about a massacre in the Chechen village of Novye Aldy in February 2000. The film was directed by peace activists Yelena Vilenskaya, Nikolai Rybakov, and Yekaterina Sokiryanskaya.

The film is a collection of footage taken by the residents of the village of Novye Aldy a few days after the massacre and of interviews of the survivors taken by Chechen human rights defender Natalia Estemirova in February 2009, just half a year before her murder.
