Pomor Activist Accused of Treason

The Finnish-Russian Civic Forum (FINROSFORUM) promotes cooperation between the peoples of Finland and Russia by supporting civic initiatives for democracy, human rights, and free speech.

One of the leaders of the Pomor movement in Russia's Arkhangelsk region, Ivan Moseyev, stands accused of treason. Mr Moseyev's organisation, The Pomor Renaissance, is calling for the Pomor people to be granted the official status of a national minority.

The FSB accuses Mr Moseyev of destabilising the political and social situation in Russia's North-West and of acting under orders from the Norwegian secret services. Mr Moseyev himself says the criminal case against him is nothing but a FSB provocation.

The FSB took an interest in the Pomor movement after an article in the Kommersant-Vlast magazine about the Pomor movement's activities. The trial against Mr Moseyev will begin in Arkhangelsk on 12 November 2012. If convicted, he faces 12-20 years in prison.
